8 Baby Boomer’s Secrets (not so Secret) to a Long Life

The Baby Boomers are not going to go quietly in the night. We want to live long, full and active lives. Science is now uncovering the secrets of longevity and the amazing thing is these secrets are available to us now! secrets to longevity . A recent research into people who are healthy and active well into their 90’s and 100’s is exposing some simple steps we can all take to live healthy and produxtive lives far beyond what is considered normal.

Although research shows that longevity does run in families, having good genes is only part of the story. Whether these people live in Asia, India, Russia, Finland or America they all have some things in common that all of us can incorporate into our daily habits and routines. This plus taking advantage of what’s available to us though modern medicine gives us clear guidelines as to the steps we can take.

1. Lose weight: How many people in their nineties or older are grossly over weight? Who knows, but I would guess the number is some where between none and zero. Losing weight is and important key to longevity.

2. Healthy Diet: Of course losing weight is closely related to having a healthy diet. Reducing or eliminating red meat and processed foods and replacing them with plant based foods, locally grown food and whole grains just makes sense.

3. Exercise: The key here is to get moving and stay moving. Find an activity that you enjoy, dancing, walking, yoga, etc and do it.

4. Socialize: Those with a wide network of friends and family seem to live long, happy, productive lives. Maybe isolating the aged in nursing homes is not conducive to longevity.

5. Learn Something New Everyday: My Mom who is 87 this year emails, is on Facebook, does cross words puzzles and keeping her mind sharp. Learn something new everyday.

6. See a doctor: Get regular check ups. Prevention is the key and with all the tools, medicines available to us is a common sense way to stay healthy.

7. Get a good night sleep: This is my biggest challenge.

8. Stop smoking: Okay this should be obvious.

Will practicing any of the above get you to your 100th birthday? Well there’s no iron clad promise, but most doctor’s and longevity experts agree that following these steps will ensure that you will live a long and healthy life whatever age you reach and isn’t that what’s important?
